One of the humankind’s oldest discoveries is fire. But if you ask people what fire is actually, most of them will say it’s something frightening and destructive involving flames. Yes indeed, a fire can destroy numbers of houses or businesses which have taken decades to establish. This is why methods of putting out fires are so important. Almost all the buildings have their own fire extinguisher, but most of them have it in a place which is hard to reach during emergency.

Even if they reach to it, most of the people don’t know how to use them. Samsung, which is best known to the tech-loving people for its mobile devices, computers and televisions, has recently come up with a new technology to put out a fire which is called “Firevase”!
The Firevase, as its name suggests, works just like a normal flower vase. At first glance, it does not look much dissimilar from any other flower vase. But if you look closely, you’ll find that it actually contains two chambers. The inner chamber holds water where you can put flowers. The outer chamber contains potassium carbonate. Potassium Carbonate is a chemical which acts as an oxygen suppressant.

The key concept is that, whenever the Firevase comes in contact with fire, it breaks and the liquid chemical gets released. After being revealed, it starts a quick cooling reaction that suppresses oxygen, putting out the fire. All you need to do is, keep these Firevases near the places where fire might break out or keep it in some easy-to-reach places so that you can find it and throw it at a fire like a grenade in order to put it out.
Samsung Risk Consultants Distributed Firevase as a Part of Awareness Campaign in South Korea; Image Source: www.youtube.com
The Firevase was designed and made as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of keeping a fire extinguisher to hand in South Korea. According to architecture and design magazine Dezeen, in South Korea, over 10,000 residential fires occur every year. There was a new law that required all homes in South Korea to have a fire extinguisher by 2017.
Despite of this law, Samsung Fire & Marine which is an insurance company based in Seoul, South Korea, showed in a research that 58 per cent of homes still didn’t have one. “When a fire breaks out, the effect one single fire extinguisher can have to help kill the fire in its early stage equals that of a whole fire truck,” the company said. It also added, “So with the strategy to equip Koreans that were indifferent to fire safety with fire extinguishers, we created one that was unique so it would increase their desire to have one.”
On behalf of this insurance company, from September to December 2018, 20,000 Samsung Risk Consultants distributed them to fire-prone areas and homes in South Korea as a part of the campaign. As the promotional campaign was a great success and it helped to increase the number of households with an extinguisher by 8 per cent, the company decided to produce more.

Fire incidents in Bangladesh are no uncommon nowadays. According to a report, the number of fire incidents has increased more than threefold across Bangladesh since 1997. It also reported that on an average, 53 fire incidents happened daily in 2018. According to Fire Service and Civil Defense statistics, around 2,50,000 fire incidents took place in the country in between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2018. In many cases, lack of awareness are responsible for fires.
Public awareness can significantly reduce the number of fires. It has become an essential that every civilian should be trained so that they can act accordingly during any fire incident. Despite of giving proper training, people lack awareness. They seem careless about having any fire extinguisher in their residence or don’t show any interest to know about the usage process of the fire extinguishers. In these cases, Samsung’s Firevase can be a good solution as it does not require any training to be used during fire emergency.
